Eleven by Patricia Reilly giff

Giff, Patricia Reilly. Eleven a mystery. New York: Wendy Lamb Books, 2008. Print.

This is the story of Sam and his new friend Caroline as they work together to attempt to solve the mystery of Sam's past. There is something strange Sam can barely remember, something that involves the number 11. What could eleven be? To find out you will have to read the book.

I really liked this book because at the core of the story was a boy trying to become a better reader, and discovering the benefits of being a reader. I would recommend this title to use as a read aloud for about 4th grade students. It has a mystery woven into it. A good recommendation for children who like mysteries and realistic fiction.

Extra Credit

Extra Credit by Andrew Clements
This is about a girl who is failing 6th grade and will not go onto 7th if she does not improve her school work and participate in a pen pal program with a student in another country. The pen pal project takes on a life of its own as people from both Afghanastan and the small town in Illinois begin to have problems with the communication.
I thought the book was good, it definitely was not Clements' best work. The ending fell flat for me.
